Essentially, a convertible is any vehicle that converts from an enclosed state to an open-air state and vice versa. There are a lot of names for this coolest of vehicle styles: convertible, cabriolet, cabrio, roadster, soft top, rag top, drop top, etc. But no matter what you call it, this is where you’ll find it. Most convertibles fall into one of two categories: soft top or hardtop. Generally speaking, soft top convertibles have a folding roof made of canvas, vinyl or other textiles while hardtop convertibles have roofs made of aluminum, steel, plastic or other rigid materials.
In a soft top convertible, the textile roof is stretched over a folding frame that may include interior linings like a sound-buffering layer and/or an interior headliner to hide the frame. These tops are often designed to have electric or electro-hydraulic mechanisms raise and lower them.
Hardtops, on the other hand, come in a few different styles. The most common of these are detachable hardtops and retractable hardtops. In a detachable hardtop, the entire rigid cover is removed and stored, examples include Mazda MX-5s and Jeep Wranglers. Retractable hardtops often have several rigid roof segments and a complex dual-hinged trunk lid that is designed to store the retracted roof without interfering with items in the trunk.

Generally speaking, a coupe is a closed-body, two-door style of car with a permanent, fixed roof that is shorter than a sedan of the same model. Coupes frequently have seating for only two people or very tightly spaced rear seat. Of course, this definition varies between car companies. Coupes also tend to be sportier and more streamlined than their four-door counterparts.
As with sedans, you have many choices when it comes to picking a coupe: engine size, colors, seating arrangements, etc. Coupes are more likely to have a more powerful engine than a sedan. 6-cylinder engines are the most common, and 8-cylinder engines show up fairly regularly as well. Manual transmissions are more common in coupes than in sedans, but they are still outnumbered by automatic transmission. Almost all coupes are 2-wheel drive, which adds to the feeling of coupes being sporty. If you’re looking for a fun car, but you don’t want to go with a convertible, a coupe could be right for you.

Sedans are one of the most common styles of car body available. They typically feature four doors and two rows of seating in the passenger compartment with the back row of seating generally being large enough to accommodate adult passengers comfortably. Another characteristic feature of most sedans is that the back window slopes down to a cargo compartment that is lower than the roof of the vehicle. This is in contrast to hatchbacks, crossovers and station wagons that all remain high through the cargo compartment, providing a taller storage area. With rare exceptions, the cargo compartment, commonly called the trunk, is located at the back of the vehicle.
Because they are so common, you have a lot of options when it comes to sedans: different colors, engine sizes, transmission types, etc. About two thirds of sedans feature 4-cylinder engines with most of the balance having more powerful 6-cylinder engines. There are, however, a few variations that feature other sizes of engines. Most sedans are 2-wheel drive, with the most common being front-wheel drive. In today’s market, you’ll typically find a myriad of automatic transmissions with a select few having manual transmissions. In recent years, many car companies have been introducing hybrid sedans as well as sedans that run on alternative fuels.

Generally speaking, hatchbacks remain high through the cargo compartment, providing a taller storage area than is typically available in sedans. Many of them have fold-down second row seating as well, so that the interior can be reconfigured to prioritize either cargo volume or passenger seating. This ability to reconfigure your available space at need makes hatchbacks a versatile vehicle choice. Many hatchbacks are described as three-door (two entry doors and a rear hatch) or five-door (four entry doors and a rear hatch). Some hatchbacks have a removable, rigid parcel shelf that lifts with the tailgate or a flexible roll-up cover designed to cover the cargo space behind the rear seats.
While early examples of this body configuration can be traced back to the 1930, the term itself dates from the 1970s. Hatchbacks are marketed worldwide and range in size from superminis to small family cars. If a vehicle has a rear hatch access but the rear roof and window slope down instead of remaining high, it is sometimes referred to as a liftback. This is a substyle of the hatchback.
